Junior High

English games and activities for ALTs teaching junior high classes.

This game is all about using your poker face. And lying. And having fun of course. What do you have in your pencil case? Two pencils...

Basic Info

Time: 10 mins
Level: Junior high grade 1
Works with: I have two pencils.
Class size: small to large

You will need:

  • nothing

Description

  1. In groups or pairs, students (seated) start by emptying everything out of their pencil cases.
  2. One student takes one or two things and puts them back in the pencil case while the other(s) look away or close their eyes.
  3. Once ready, the waiting student(s) asks "What do you have in your pencil case?"
  4. The student with the pencil case answers either truthfully or not. The others guess whether he's telling the truth and then the pencil case is opened.

Tips

  • Keep items to 5 max, and only two different types.

Warnings

  • This is one of those games that students will get super caught up in what they are doing and forget all about using English. Demonstrate with the teacher how to respond to a non-English comment. "Sorry, English please!"

Variations

  • A similar game is the Do you have a pen? game.
  • Another variation is where one student puts something in their pencil case and asks the other student to guess what it is. "What's in my pencil case?" The other student can shake or feel the pencil case.

Comments

This game applies the English to a scenario where that English might actually be used. It's also a fun, playful activity for young junior high school students. This game can be used with Sunshine 1 Program 4-2.
